April 2009

Jurassic Park

Explore the land before time! Imagine living in a time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. What have paleontologists learned about the great beasts that roamed the Earth millions of years ago? Did any dinosaurs live where you do now? Find out what they ate, where they lived, and how they moved. What could we learn of these creatures that lived so long ago? Make a model of a dinosaur or visit a museum where dinosaur fossils can be seen. Make your own "dinosaur footprints" or "fossils" in plaster. Take a "dinosaur" scavenger hike by going on a hike and looking for things that might have been found during the Jurassic era. This would be a great time to work on the Geology belt loop and pin. Read about scouting themes.

Raingutter Regatta!

In lieu of a June pack meeting, we will be having a potluck picnic and raingutter regatta (think pinewood derby but with boats). Mark your calendar for Saturday, June 6 at 5:30pm at Cedar Mill Park (next to Cedar Mill Elementary). Parent organizer Ambica Sogal needs help! If you can lend a hand (especially if you're a Tiger parent), please see or email Ambica at a_sogal@yahoo.com.

New Cubmaster

As of June, Shellie will be stepping down as Pack 207 Cubmaster. Since her youngest son will be joining Cub Scouts as a Tiger, Shellie will serve as the den leader for both the Tigers and the Webelos (I and II) for the coming year. Dave Hobson graciously has accepted the Cubmaster position for 2009-10. Dave's son, Ian, is a Bear, and his older son is a Boy Scout. Dave has served in many different capacities, both in Cub Scout packs and Boy Scout troops, and brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm. We're very lucky to have Dave leading Pack 207! Please offer him your thanks and congratulations.

Call for Tigers

Hard to believe, but we have started to recruit next year's Tigers! If you know of a kindergarten boy enrolled at Cedar Mill, Bonny Slope, French-American School, or Caitlin Gabel or who may be homeschooled in the area, please encourage him to check out Cub Scouting. Any prospective Tiger parents can call or email Shellie at 503 291-5120

Hooked on Scouting

Like to fish or never tried? Join us on Saturday, May 2, from 10am-2pm at Horning's Hideout in North Plains. (For directions, go to www.horningshideout.com.) If you don't have a fishing pole, one will be provided. This event is open to all scouts who bring a non-scout friend with them. Scouts that are currently registered can earn 3 awards. Fishing derby participants will qualify for the brand new fishing segment and have an opportunity to earn their fishing belt loop. Scouts that recruit a friend can earn the recruiter segment! You do not have to sign up in advance. Just come!

Dress the Part

Please remember that all scouts should wear their uniforms to school on den and pack meeting days.

Awards

Is your son missing a belt loop, pin or segment that you think he has earned? Please check with Janet Vanoni.

Friends of Scouting Goal Reached

We reached our goal for the Friends of Scouting campaign! Thanks to everyone who contributed. And thank you to Daina Stockwell for collecting.

Looking Ahead

At April's pack meeting, we will be looking ahead to next year. We will be asking all parents to fill out a registration form for their son if he will be returning to scouting next year (and we hope that he will!). This will simplify the registration process in the fall. In addition, all parents will be asked to sign up for a parent job. Every parent in the pack is required to do so. (If you or your spouse serve on the Pack Committe, only one job is required per family.) Remember, many hands make light work!

Den Up Past Bedtime

Has your den gone on its almost overnighter or overnighter? There are lots of choices: Oregon Zoo, OMSI, Oregon Coast Aquarium or Bullwinkles. Talk to your den leader about details.

Camp Money Due

Because our pack raised enough money through the Friends of Scouting campaign, all scouts qualify for a discounted rate. The remainder of the camp balance is coming due. Talk with your den's camp coordinator about the details. Don't miss the deadline!

News from the Dens

Den 2 -

Den 3 - The Bears toured the Portland Art Museum at the end of last month. The boys chose to see "Animals in Art." They explored several different media: painting, wood carving and sculpture. As an added bonus, they got to see real Chihuly glass - part of what they've been studying in Art Lit at school. At another den meeting, they made waterscopes for their upcoming trip to the Tualatin Nature Center. Most of the Bears have completed their achievements and will be receiving their Bear Badge at April's pack meeting.

Den 4 -

Den 1 & Den 8 -

Den 9 -  The Wolves have been “doing their best” to complete their wolf badge requirements by the April 17 pack meeting. We also learned a little about maps and compasses to prepare for our adventure at Scout-O. Read more about the Wolves’ Den.

May’s Theme is Leave Nothing but Footprints!

Warm weather is a perfect time for outdoor adventure, complete with den hikes in the neighborhood, park, or on local trails. As we enjoy our outdoor world, we should strive to take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints. Learn about Leave No Trace frontcountry guidelines and ways we can minimize our impact on the environment. Take a backyard hike and practice the Leave No Trace frontcountry guidelines. Have a contest to see who can take the best wildlife photograph. Earn the Cub Scout Leave No Trace Awareness Award. Do your Good Turn and leave these areas cleaner then you found them. Remember to record your service with Good Turn for America. The end of the month has all dens moving up the Cub Scout trail. You might want to consider working on the Wildlife Conservation belt loop and pin this month.
