Special
Thank You
Kudos to our wreath sales coordinators, Paul Chastain and
Kristi Skiba! It’s a big job to organize our wreath
sales, but it’s also an important one. Proceeds from the
sale, along with pack dues, finance our scouting events all year
long. Thank you to Paul for painstakingly processing each order
form as well as picking up the wreaths. And thank you to Kristi
for converting her garage into a “Wreath Central.”
Not to be forgotten, thank you to Anne Chastain who purchased
all the prizes.
News from the Dens
Den

Den
3 -
Earlier this month, the Bears visited Magness Memorial Tree Farm
near Wilsonville. The manager, Bill Wood (appropriately named!),
gave us a tour on this property which is used for forest education.
We learned that you can tell the age of a Douglas Fir not only
by counting its rings but also by counting the sets of branches
along its trunk. You and your family can visit the tree farm too.
It’s a nice spot for a short hike and picnic lunch.
Den
4 - We started the month by delivering the thanksgiving
placemats to the residents at Regency Park. It was a great experience
for the boys. Brought lots of smiles to the resident's faces.
We then passed out the bags as a den and all participated in the
scouting for food and bowling event on the 6th. We then moved
the den meeting to my house a week later focusing on achievement
1- "Making our family special". We made family scrapbooks.
Our field trip will be later in the month at the wash cty museum.
Den
1 & Den 8 - The Webelos are currently working on
their Engineering Badge. We have learned about the different types
of engineering and what those engineers do. One of our scout dads
is an electrical engineer and he talked to us about his job. Then
he showed us how to build different types of electrical circuits.
We also did Scouting for Food in the NW Benfield neighborhood
and collected 20 bags of food! Great job, Webelos!
Den
9 - The
Wolves had a great time passing out food bags, collecting food,
and going bowling. We also decorated “Idea Boxes”
and filled them with lots of cool home-made games to play with
our families during our time off school. Go Wolves!

Pinewood Derby
It’s
Pinewood Derby time! Our January pack meeting will be dedicated
to racing our pinewood derby cars. No advancements, no announcements.
Just racing!
For those
of you who are unfamiliar with the Pinewood Derby, scouts race
their cars (4 to 6 at a time) on a wooden track. While some packs
race competitively, Pack 207 does not. This way, scouts have multiple
chances to race their cars.
Each scout
is provided with a car kit to make with an adult. The adult doesn’t
have to be a parent. Grandparents, relatives or neighbors with
tools and know-how are encouraged to help. The car should be the
boy’s work with adult supervision – especially when
it comes to cutting the wood.
Because our
race is not competitive, we strongly discourage parents from buying
special kits and wheels. Please use the kit that is provided.
The boys can decorate their cars in any way that they would like,
including paint and stickers. Be creative!
Please do not
use graphite to make your car go faster. The graphite makes a
mess on the gym floor!
All cars must
weigh 5 ounces. Make sure to weigh your car prior to the meeting.
You can use washers or coins (attached with hot glue) to add weight.
If you don’t have an accurate scale, bring your car to the
post office to be weighed by a clerk.
Parents, don’t
leave this project to the last minute. Winter break is a good
time to get started.
All boys who
participate will receive a segment. Siblings are welcome to make
and race their own cars. Kits will be for sale at the end of the
meeting for $3 each.
January’s Theme is A-MAZE-ing Games!
January
is a good time for indoor fun. Make and solve puzzles. Stump
your friends with riddles. Build a maze, do crossword puzzles,
and word searches. Have a pack games night in which your family
joins in for relays, board games, and other cooperative games.
Play Cub Scout Jeopardy; how much do you know about Cub Scouting?
Rediscover some of the games that your parents and your grandparents
could have played and work on the Heritages belt loop and pin.
Discuss why playing by the rules is important. The pinewood
derby is a good opportunity to learn about rules and good sportsmanship.
Why not work on the Chess belt loop and pin?
