February 2009

American ABCs

Take a personalized tour of the USA by the letters: Austin, Baton Rouge and Cambridge to Xenia, York and Zion. Our country contains an endless variety of scenic and historic places. What is special about these places? This month we'll find out by visiting historic places, theme parks, museums, and zoos. Choose a city or an historical site to highlight. Invite a guest speaker who can share something special about the places your Cub Scouts have picked to discover. Use maps or collect tourist brochures to learn more about places to visit. Your local historical society or public library is a great place to get started. Celebrate your blue and gold banquet with local foods from your choices of the ABCs and decorate to highlight your choice.

This would be a good month to work on the Citizenship belt loop or pin or the Geography belt loop or pin.

Friends of Scouting

We are launching our Friends of Scouting Campaign this Friday at the Blue and Gold Banquet. If your family is new to scouting this year, the Friends of Scouting campaign is the one time a year when Boy Scouts of America ask for a financial contribution from its members and local community. We would like to thank the parents of our Scouts for all of the donating already done in the form of time and expertise. We thank you in advance for any financial contribution you can make to this campaign. Please bring your tax deductible donation to the Blue and Gold Banquet on Friday, February 20th. Money raised during our Friends of Scouting Campaign goes to provide wonderful opportunities for our Scouts and many others that may not have such opportunities without your help. If we reach our fundraising goal, each scout in our pack will receive a discount on the cost of camp. Please give want you can!

Good Will Good Turn

Collection bags will be distributed to den leaders at the Blue and Gold banquet next Friday. Dens will deliver the bags door-to-door ahead of time and on Saturday morning, March 7th, scouts will collect the filled bags and den leaders will drop them off at a Goodwill drop station (the location on Cornell Rd and Bethany, near Krispy Kreme, is the most efficient for drop-offs). Scouts should check with their den leaders regarding exact time and location. All scouts who participate with get a segment. Den leaders – please remember to send a list of participating scouts to Wendy.

Snow Play Day

Snow play day is coming on February 22nd 9:00 to 3:00 and we have a great turnout! Following are some suggestions to enhance the fun:
- Parking is limited so carpooling is encouraged
- You will need to purchase a snow park permit for the day available at Joe’s Outdoor or gas stations in Sandy.
- Helmets are highly recommended for sledding.
- Please bring a lunch.
- Dress warm and waterproof.
- There is a ¼ mile hike to the lodge from the road so suggest carrying a backpack so you are hands free for the walk up the snow trail.
- Directions are at http://www.pack207.org/Events/snowplay.htm.

Scout O!

Where: Champoeg State Park
When: Sat morning, April 11
Duration: about 2 hours
Cost: $2 for Tigers, $4 for others

Have fun finding your way around a course with a map and a compass! Tigers are in teams of 4, older Cub Scouts are in teams of 2. Sign-ups will be taken at the Blue&Gold (Feb 20th) and the March 20th pack meeting, or email by Mar 20th to Ken Dyall. Training is provided for beginners half an hour before the start time. The start times will be sent out after registration is finished. We are aiming for about 10am.

News from the Dens

Den 2 - The Cedar Mill Tiger Den visited KATU TV station for this month's Go-See-It. They saw how news was produced and learned how TV signals were transmitted from the broadcast center to our homes. This was a very exciting and educational trip for the scouts. Many Thanks to Shellie for hosting us at her workplace. At the Den meeting we started with the Pledge of Allegiance, and then learned how to use a compass and read a map. We located Oregon and Florida on an unmarked US map and located major landmarks on a blank State of Oregon map. The team activity involved making a decoration for the upcoming Blue&Gold banquet. We ended the Den meeting by practicing the Scout motto and Law of the Pack.

Den 3 - The Bears have been working on several projects this month. Each scout earned his Whittling Chip by completing a soap boat. We learned how to sharpen and use our pocket knives safely. Thanks to parent Dave Hobson for the tutorial. We also built and painted rockets. We will be launching them at our next meeting. 3-2-1... Blast off!

Den 4 - Our achievement this month focused on health and fitness. Our "go see it",to a sporting event, was completed by the den families. At our den meeting, each tiger constructed a food pyramid and we briefly discussed healthy and nonhealthy food options as well as the need for fresh air and exercise. We ended our meeting making blue and gold chain decorations which clearly was the highlight for our tigers.

Den 1 & Den 8 -

Den 9 -  In December, we had a great time making “Family Fun” boxes full of homemade games that we could play with our families. Then we got together during the winter break to make our pinewood derby cars, and we had great fun at the Pinewood Derby racing our cars. In our meetings in January, we learned how to bandage a cut and how to prevent spreading colds; we made fun little catapults using wood, rubber bands, plastic spoons, and duct tape; and we had an older Scout come teach us how to do outdoor flag ceremonies. We also made blue and gold neckerchief “clips” to wear to the Blue and Gold banquet, and we made about 50 feet of blue and gold chains! We also went to the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center to learn about some of our history. Go, Wolves! Owooooo! Read more about the Wolves’ Den.

March’s Theme is When I grow up!

Explore career possibilities of the 21st century this month. Host a pack career fair, inviting several adults to share what they do for a living and how these career opportunities might change as you grow up and technology advances. Discover how having a positive attitude is essential in reaching career goals. Den meeting plans could include field trips to learn about different occupations of interest to the boys and playing games centered on different jobs. This would be a good month to work on any of the Cub Scout Academics and Sports belt loops and pins - let the boys vote on the one that fits best with what they want to be when they grow up. For those future astronauts this month is a perfect time for a space derby!
