A-MAZE-ing Games

January is a good time for indoor fun. Make and solve puzzles. Stump your friends with riddles. Build a maze, do crossword puzzles, and word searches. Have a pack games night in which your family joins in for relays, board games, and other cooperative games. Play Cub Scout Jeopardy; how much do you know about Cub Scouting? Rediscover some of the games that your parents and your grandparents could have played and work on the Heritages belt loop and pin. Discuss why playing by the rules is important. The pinewood derby is a good opportunity to learn about rules and good sportsmanship. Why not work on the Chess belt loop and pin? Read about scouting themes.

Special Thank You

Kudos to our wreath sales coordinators, Paul Chastain and Kristi Skiba! It’s a big job to organize our wreath sales, but it’s also an important one. Proceeds from the sale, along with pack dues, finance our scouting events all year long. Thank you to Paul for painstakingly processing each order form as well as picking up the wreaths. And thank you to Kristi for converting her garage into a “Wreath Central.” Not to be forgotten, thank you to Anne Chastain who purchased all the prizes.

News from the Dens

Den 2 - Our Den meeting was focused on getting some achievements completed. We made paper planes, a "bagel and seed" bird feeder, a canoe, and lunch bag puppets. We had a terrific time flying the aeroplane and animating the puppets. Max Garcia had a sharing opportunity which the Den enjoyed hearing. We also practiced the Pledge of Allegiance. For our go-see-it we visited the Washington County Museum and learned several things about the history of our community. The highlights of the visit was the "beaver dress up" and the action play in the "jail house" within the museum. We are looking forward to our visit to the TV station, and the Pinewood Derby!

Den 3 - In December, the Bears visited Magness Memorial Tree Farm near Wilsonville. The manager, Bill Wood (appropriately named!), gave us a tour on this property which is used for forest education. We learned that you can tell the age of a Douglas Fir not only by counting its rings but also by counting the sets of branches along its trunk. You and your family can visit the tree farm too. It’s a nice spot for a short hike and picnic lunch. In January, we visited the Washington County Historical Museum. We learned about the history of Native Americans in this area and how the museum works to preserve our history today.

Den 4 - All 5 in our den delivered the Thanksgiving placemats to the residents of Regency Park. The kids got to interact with some of the residents and brought many smiles to their faces. We also all managed to go bowling after "scouting for food" AND some den members even managed to attend scout night at the Winterhawks game. We worked on the family achievement in December making family scrapbooks at our den meeting and finally going to the washington county museum for our "go see it".
We are currently working on our Jan achievement focused on communication. We played a few games such as face charades at our den meeting with our upcoming "go see it" to KATU TV station at the end of the month.

Den 1 & Den 8 - The Webelos have been working on their Engineering Badge. We learned about the different types of engineering and what those engineers do. An electrical engineer talked to us about his job and showed us how to build different types of electrical circuits. We built catapults and learned how pulleys work. We also collected 20 bags of food in the NW Benfield neighborhood during Scouting for Food. Great job, Webelos!

Den 9 -    Read more about the Wolves’ Den.

Scout Blazer Night Tickets

Remember those Blazer tickets you bought a few months back? Well, they are here and we'd like to get them out of our hands and into yours! Jenny Hagerup (the Webelos Leader) has the tickets and will be handing them out tonight during the derby. If you bought tickets at the November pack meeting, make sure to pick them up from Jenny at the Pinewood Derby Pack meeting. The game is Saturday, March 7th at 7pm."

February’s Theme is American ABCs!

Take a personalized tour of the USA by the letters: Austin, Baton Rouge and Cambridge to Xenia, York and Zion. Our country contains an endless variety of scenic and historic places. What is special about these places? This month we'll find out by visiting historic places, theme parks, museums, and zoos. Choose a city or an historical site to highlight. Invite a guest speaker who can share something special about the places your Cub Scouts have picked to discover. Use maps or collect tourist brochures to learn more about places to visit. Your local historical society or public library is a great place to get started. Celebrate your blue and gold banquet with local foods from your choices of the ABCs and decorate to highlight your choice. This would be a good month to work on the Citizenship belt loop or pin or the Geography belt loop or pin.
