Leave Nothing but Footprints

Warm weather is a perfect time for outdoor adventure, complete with den hikes in the neighborhood, park, or on local trails. As we enjoy our outdoor world, we should strive to take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints. Learn about Leave No Trace frontcountry guidelines and ways we can minimize our impact on the environment. Take a backyard hike and practice the Leave No Trace frontcountry guidelines. Have a contest to see who can take the best wildlife photograph. Earn the Cub Scout Leave No Trace Awareness Award. Do your Good Turn and leave these areas cleaner then you found them. Remember to record your service with Good Turn for America. The end of the month has all dens moving up the Cub Scout trail. You might want to consider working on the Wildlife Conservation belt loop and pin this month. Read about scouting themes.

Pack Picnic/Raingutter Regatta!

Our last meeting will actually be our pack picnic and rain gutter regatta on Saturday, June 6 at Cedar Mill Park next to Cedar Mill Elementary. We'll start at 5pm. The pack will supply hot dogs, veggie burgers, buns, condiments, plates, napkins, utensils and dessert. Families need to provide side dishes, drinks, chairs and blankets. We'll be celebrating Oregon's 150th birthday with cookies in the shape of the state! The boys will be getting awards and their neckerchiefs (those who are returning) for next year. They'll also be racing their boats in a rain gutter regatta... just for fun!

New Cubmaster

As of June, Shellie will be stepping down as Pack 207 Cubmaster. Since her youngest son will be joining Cub Scouts as a Tiger, Shellie will serve as the den leader for both the Tigers and the Webelos (I and II) for the coming year. Dave Hobson graciously has accepted the Cubmaster position for 2009-10. Dave's son, Ian, is a Bear, and his older son is a Boy Scout. Dave has served in many different capacities, both in Cub Scout packs and Boy Scout troops, and brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm. We're very lucky to have Dave leading Pack 207! Please offer him your thanks and congratulations.

School Carnivals

The scouts will be represented at both the Bonny Slope and Cedar Mill carnivals. We'll be hauling out the pinewood derby tracks! We're asking scouts to wear their uniforms to the carnivals. And if your son brings two non-scout friends over to our booth, there'll be a treat for him!

New Pinewood Derby Tracks

The pack committee has approved the purchase of a new 42-foot, 6-lane metal track, leveling kit, timer and track software. Wow! That's cool!

Parent Volunteers

We've made parent job assignments for 2009-10. Please pick up a copy on the back table. We did our best job to honor preferences, but in some cases, it was not possible. Webelos parents got first choice, Bear parents got second choice, etc. If you turned in your registration form late, your preferences were probably filled. If you marked your registration form "undecided," you haven't yet been assigned. We still have CRITICAL positions that are open: Committee Chair, Volunteer Chair and Awards Chair. Please consider learning more about these positions by talking to Shellie.

Awards

Is your son missing a belt loop, pin or segment that you think he has earned? Please check with Janet Vanoni.

Friends of Scouting Goal Reached

We reached our goal for the Friends of Scouting campaign! Thanks to everyone who contributed. And thank you to Daina Stockwell for collecting.

Looking Ahead

At April's pack meeting, we will be looking ahead to next year. We will be asking all parents to fill out a registration form for their son if he will be returning to scouting next year (and we hope that he will!). This will simplify the registration process in the fall. In addition, all parents will be asked to sign up for a parent job. Every parent in the pack is required to do so. (If you or your spouse serve on the Pack Committe, only one job is required per family.) Remember, many hands make light work!

Pack Survey

Thank you for filling out the pack survey. We'll be adding the following activities next year: Beavers Game, Monster Truck Rally and Family Campout/Conservation Project at Barton Park. We're also adding a community service project: a flag plant on Veterans Day. Pack meetings will include more games and skits and less talking!

News from the Dens

Den 2 -

Den 3 - Den 3 is ending the year on a high note! We visited the Tualatin Hills Nature Center and searched for tadpoles in the ponds with our homemade waterscopes. We found them, and we found algae balls too! We also made our rain gutter regatta boats and played Red Rover, Red Rover and Chinese Wall. We're also looking ahead to going to cub scout camp at Gilbert Ranch (July 30-August 1) and learning to ride and care for horses!

Den 4 - As a den we learned how to play flag football and then had a game amongst ourselves and some parents. We earned the flag football belt loop as a result. We will be working on our raingutter regattas this month. And camp for our den is scheduled for July 20-24 at Camp Ireland.

Den 1 & Den 8 -

Den 9 -  At our den meetings this month, the Wolves made and decorated some very fun paper kites and flew them in the field next to the school. We also tied about a bzillion square knots while making fleece pillows for our patch collections. One side is blue, for our Cub Scout patches, and one side is red, for when we are in Boy Scouts. We’re really looking forward to getting patches at our camps this summer – we are going to two of them! Camp Ireland will be July 20-24, just like the Tigers, and then we are off to CubWorld for our first overnighter on August 7-9. Go Wolves! Owooo! Read more about the Wolves’ Den.
