Adventures in Books
The theme for October as determined by the Boy Scouts of America is Adventures in Books. So what's the secret to getting boys to read? Give them books about things they like: adventure, biography, science fiction, sports, and yes, even gross humor. For more parent tips, read

Bring Your Cub's Past Adventures to the Pack Meeting
As part of our "Adventures in Books" theme for October, we are collecting books for The Children's Book Bank, which is a Portland organization that helps get books to low income families that have few books, if any, in their homes.
Here is what they are looking for:
"The greatest need is for picture books, or books one would read aloud to a child. Board books, concept books (books about letters, numbers, shapes, colors, opposites, etc.), rhyming books, story books, silly books, books about animals and nature, books in Spanish or other foreign languages are all greatly appreciated. Very simple chapter books are also OK."
Please bring the books your children have outgrown and are no longer reading to the Pack Meeting on October 24th. New books are OK, too.

Calling all Scouts!
It’s our annual wreath fundraiser event which starts Oct 24 and runs through November 14th. You only have three weeks including only two weekends for the most important and only significant fund raising event for the Scouts. Prizes are awards for selling based on sales. Wreaths are easy to sell especially the last week of October. Pick up your order sheets at the pack meeting, Friday the 24 or come by the house (11223 NW Malia Lane) Saturday morning (10/25) if you choose to go to the harvest festival at Bonny Slope. Don't miss the first weekend since it is the easiest sales opportunity. Good Luck and thank you for your participation in this important event. Any other questions, please contact Kristi at 503.645.3413
Park / Trail Cleanup is at Hand
Park Project: Ivy pulling at Cedar Mill Park on
Saturday, October 25 12-3:00pm. Tools will be provided. Please bring gloves if you have them, and wear long sleeves, long pants, and old shoes or boots. This will be rain or shine, so bring rain gear if it looks like you might need it. (Remember, there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing!)
THPRD would like to know how many people to expect, so if you plan to come, please e-mail Susan or put your name on the sign-up sheet at the Pack meeting

News from the Dens
Den 1 & 8 -
The Webelos have been working hard on their Citizen, Fitness, and Readyman badges. We will be going to Magness Memorial Tree Farm next week to earn our Forester badge.
Den 2 -
We had out first Den meeting with raving success. We has 8 tiger scouts and a wolf (Mihira) and boy scout (Jamie) who mentored the new tiger scouts. We practiced the scout law, motto, handshake, sign and salute. We did introductions and learned what each of the tigers liked to do, Then we made a Den totem pole and assembled it. Our den will meet on the first Thursday of each month at the Cedar Mill Elementary School. We were delighted to learn that a new tiger scout will join us, making us a den of 9 tigers!
Den 3 -
It's been a busy month for the Bears! We visited Quantum Resources Recycling Plant to see just what happens to all those things that get recycled. We also learned and practiced three new knots: Square, Slip and Bowline. And finally, we completed our den community service project at the Helping Hands Food and Clothing Bank, housed at Sunset Presbyterian Church. The boys cleaned shelves to get them ready for food, folded and hung clothes, and made a new welcome sign. The bank gives out food provided by the Oregon Food Bank. So who knows, some of the food collected through Scouting for Food could end up on those shelves!
Den 4 -
We had our den meeting on the 9th. We started with a prayer and the pledge of allegience then quickly moved into creating a code of conduct for the den. The boys help create it then signed it. We then played a game related to how to wear their uniform. Then we practiced the promise as well as the other requirements for the bobcat badge. We then went on a short hike behind the school to find leaves for our craft. we then did leaf rubbings. We then went to the Tualatin Hills nature park on the 17th for a hike and a picnic. Our actiivities for the month filled all our requirements for achievement 5 "Let's go outdoors" and all the boys passed their testing on the bobcat badge.
Den 9 -
The Wolf den has grown by leaps and bounds! Our six boys from last year have welcomed one Cub Scout from another Pack plus 4 new boys. We have been helping our new Scouts along the Bobcat Trail, learning a little about each other as we go. We painted big boxes to store all our cool Cub Scout stuff, and we made “Who Can Help” phone lists to use at home if we have an emergency. We’ve also been learning how to treat our US flag (and how not to treat it), as well as how to display it and how to fold it. Go Wolves! OWOOOOO!

Look the Part
Please
remember to have your son wear his uniform to school on the days of his den
and pack meetings. The shirt should
be tucked in with jeans or dark blue pants or shorts. Also, we lose several neckerchief
slides every year. Consider
sewing the slide onto the neckerchief (see Gillian
for an example) or wrap masking tape around the back of the slide to make
it fit more snugly.
Please encourage your son to wear his uniform with pride! Read more.
November’s Theme is Seeds of Kindness!
As we approach Thanksgiving, let us spread seeds of kindness in the form of multiple small service projects. Helping others gives the boys the opportunity to see the bounty produced by spreading many small seeds of kindness and encourages compassion. The boys can discover that just as the large strong oak tree came from the small acorn, big things can happen from spreading small seeds of kindness and charity. Conduct a food drive or collect coats and gloves for those in need; report your hours to Good Turn for America. Work on the Citizenship belt loop and pin.

Snow Play Day
This event is a cub scout favorite! On Sunday, February 22nd, you and your son (sorry, because of insurance liability, no siblings)
spend the day at the Boy Scout Nanitch Lodge on Mount Hood (just down the road from Timberline). You can enjoy tubing
(tubes provided) and snow fort building. Bring lunch and ski or bike helmets for safety. The pack will pay for the boys;
adults pay $8. Sign up was last month but there are four open slots so if you are interested, you must act quickly. Please sign up with Jeff at the back table during the Pack meeting.
