September 2008

What will my son gain through cub scouting?

The Cub Scouting program is designed to encourage group and family involvement in activities which help boys to learn to respect their home, country and other people.  It also helps boys:

1.      Learn new physical skills through sports, crafts and games

2.      Learn how to get along with others through group activities

3.      Expand mental skills through learning about their community and the world around them

4.      Develop personal independence

5.      Learn to make value based decisions that assist them throughout their adult life

Pack 207 has some wonderful events lined up this year for the boys, both community-minded and all out fun.  They will be collecting food for the hungry, cleaning up a nearby park and collecting clothes for Goodwill. Each den will get to choose an Overnighter or Almost Overnighter experience, either at OMSI, the Oregon Zoo, the Oregon Coast Aquarium or Bullwinkles. As a pack, we'll enjoy a pizza/bowling party, Blazer night, a snow day at the Boy Scouts lodge on Mount Hood and a swim party at the Southwest Community Center. We'll also be introducing new activities, including Scout O (orienteering) and Raingutter Regatta. Pick up a calendar from the back table in the gym at the Pack meeting. See calendar.

Great Volunteerism in the Pack

We have successfully engaged all returning families with 100% volunteerism, making the 2008-09 year one of unparalleled participation. Families that are new to scouting are not required required to manage pack activities but are welcome to contribute their time and support. the advantages of full participation is that all Pack 207 scouts will have the opportunity to see their parent/caregiver modeling volunteerism. Pick up a list of volunteer assignments from the back table at the Pack meeting. Congratulations and thank you to all!  Read more.

Pow Wow

All den leaders and pack committee leaders are strongly encouraged to attend this year’s Pow Wow, sponsored by the Cascade Pacific Council, on Saturday, November 15.  This day-long event allows leaders to receive all their training in one stop!  Remember, every boy deserves a well-trained leader!  To register for Pow Wow, go to the website: http://www.cpcbsa.org/training/counciltrainingevents/powwow/index.html

Scouttrack.com completes a banner first year

Last year, Pack 207 began using Scouttrack.com to track the boys’ achievements and manage contact information within the pack.  After a full year, pack leadership has declared it a rip-roaring success.  Not only does it easily help minimize what used to be hours of den, parents and pack leaders time overseeing acquisition of badges, awards and achievements, but it also makes it fast and easy to assess your child’s current status and outstanding requirements. Parents need to be fastidious about keeping their contact information and their child’s achievements up to date. It's the only way to ensure your son receives his awards at pack meetings. If you haven't used scouttrack.com, please ask your den leader for help. Connect to Scouttrack.com.

News from the Dens

Den 3 - We’re happy to have all of our Bears return for another year of scouting!  We’re also pleased to welcome our new Bears, Akshay and Ian.  This summer, six of our Bears attended Cub World for their first overnight camping experience.  The boys enjoyed BB gun shooting, archery and whittling, and each boy was “knighted.”  We have already had our first den meeting and completed Achievement 5: Games, Games, Games.  In two weeks, we will do our community service project.   Read more about the Bears’ Den.

Den 9 -The Wolf Cubs had a blast at Camp Ireland in August! We especially enjoyed the BB guns, archery, and shooting water rockets into the air. The suspension bridge was a lot of fun, too. We liked making it rock like a boat on the ocean; we pretended it was our pirate ship. AAARRR! Now that we are in September, we started our fall program with making photo pages of Camp Ireland for our Cub Scout memory books. We are looking forward to having some new friends in our den. We already know of three who may be joining us!    Read more about the Wolves’ Den.

Here’s a list of the essentials for your new scout:

Your son’s uniform and supplies can be purchased at the Scout Store:
2145 SW Naito Parkway, Portland.  Just tell one of the clerks that you’re a new scout parent, and they will walk you through the process.  Read more on the uniform.

Look the Part

Please remember to have your son wear his uniform to school on the days of his den and pack meetings.  The shirt should be tucked in with jeans or dark blue pants or shorts.  Also, we lose several neckerchief slides every year.  Consider sewing the slide onto the neckerchief (see Gillian for an example) or wrap masking tape around the back of the slide to make it fit more snugly.   Please encourage your son to wear his uniform with pride!   Read more.

Thank you to our new Co-Cubmaster

No appreciation is appreciation enough for the contributions offered by our new Co-Cubmaster, David.  Having over a decade of experience in leading Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, he has returned to Pack 207 to help out in our time of need. Please offer him your thanks. Read more.

October’s Theme is Adventures in Books!

What great adventures come in books? Let's discover some in October. Visit the library and learn to navigate your way through the "card catalog computer," down the aisles of many adventures, and to an adventure of your own choice. Sign up for your library card while on your visit. Create your own outdoor epic adventure on a hike, campout, or maybe at a ball field or park. Make a costume for one of the characters from your favorite story. At the pack meeting the boys can dress as their favorite book character. Take part in Pedro's "Say Yes to Reading" program in Boy's Life. This might also be a good month to work on the Communication or Computer belt loop and pin. Encourage the boys to have the courage to search for, discover, and share adventure this month.  The theme (as established by BSA) for October’s Pack meeting is “Adventures in Books.”  We’re asking that every boy dress up as a character from one of their favorite books or stories.  (If his costume precludes him from wearing his uniform, that’s ok.)  There will be PRIZES for every scout who participates! Read about scouting themes.

Park / Trail Cleanup Coming Up

Park Project: Ivy pulling at Cedar Mill Park on Saturday, October 25 12-3:00pm. Tools will be provided. Please bring gloves if you have them, and wear long sleeves, long pants, and old shoes or boots. This will be rain or shine, so bring rain gear if it looks like you might need it. (Remember, there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing!) THPRD would like to know how many people to expect, so if you plan to come, please e-mail Susan or put your name on the sign-up sheet at the Pack meeting Read more.

Snow Play Day

This event is a cub scout favorite! You and your son (sorry, because of insurance liability, no siblings) spend the day at the Boy Scout Nanitch Lodge on Mount Hood (just down the road from Timberline). You can enjoy tubing (tubes provided) and snow fort building. Bring lunch and ski or bike helmets for safety. The pack will pay for the boys; adults pay $7. Please sign up with Jeff at the back table during the Pack meeting. (Please note: the exact date will not be known until after Lodge Cleanup on October 11. However, it will likely be a Saturday in February.) When we get the date, you will find it on the website.
